Texas A&M International University – GEAR UP IV “Creating a Vision”

Texas A&M International University
Laredo, Texas

GEAR UP “Creating a Vision IV” focuses on establishing sustainable educational reform utilizing a data-driven method of isolating effective interventions, ensuring academic performance is successful in leading students to complete their collegiate goals. Each campus site enlists a College Access Team, consisting of a Site Coordinator and College Access Coach who provide direct services, guidance, and support to students. Texas A&M International University serves as a partner in implementing the GEAR UP IV philosophy of “working with the end in mind.” By changing the education trend for one generation, the catalyst is in place for all generations to follow.

Program Highlights

  • The 2012 TAMIU GEAR UP IV “Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow” Conference and Prep Rally brought together 10,000 8th-grade students at the Laredo Energy Arena. Thirty postsecondary institutions were on hand to provide information on various degree and career options. The event also included federal, state, and local elected officials who addressed attendees, witnessing firsthand the impact GEAR UP funds are having on the region and the students whose lives they're impacting.

  • The project held a series of free, three-day robotics camps for students and parents in the summer of 2013. Attendees spent the weekend settled into the Residential Learning Community on the campus at TAMIU. Building and programming robots was the star event of the weekend, which also included many other STEM activities to raise college and career awareness.

  • GEAR UP IV teamed up with frequent collaborator TAMIU to create the Pre-AP Summer Institute. Professional development was offered at no cost to GEAR UP IV 9th-grade teachers in English, history, social studies, math, and science.
  • Years of Grant: 2011-2018
  • ESC Region(s): Region 1, Region 2 and Region 20
  • Students Served: 8,800
