UTEP Solutions for Optimal Readiness (SOAR)

UTEP Solutions for Optimal Readiness (SOAR) supplies students with the necessary support and guidance to successfully navigate the rigors of their postsecondary education and influence their community. Working together with Princeton Review, UTEP SOAR prepares educationally-competitive students through commitment-to-college ceremonies where students pledge to do more than just achieve in the classroom—they pledge to accept challenges and excel in higher education. The project also partners with Communities in Action (a group of local business and community leaders who promote STEM initiatives) to communicate to both parents and students the key roles future college graduates will play in the community.
Program Highlights
- UTEP SOAR brought its entire cohort to an Opportunity Day on campus to experience the creative and valuable work being done by UTEP in science, engineering, liberal arts, and health sciences. The president of the university spoke to the students about the importance of higher education, and award-winning author/Hispanic cultural advocate Pat Mora encouraged attendees to get their college degrees.
- A joint effort between the UTEP Admissions Office and the Colleges of Engineering, Math, and Science worked together with UTEP SOAR and local school administrators to create a GEAR UP pipeline—giving students the tools needed to not only prepare for college, but to exceed all expectations.
