Grade Level: 9th/10th

Introduction for Educators: Would students be willing to pursue answers to problems in life if they were presented in a safe environment? Now is a great time to help them weigh difficult future life choices in a secure environment rather than deferring those choices until later.

Introduction for Students: Have you ever attempted to beat a game that’s tremendously hard and found yourself looking for a guide online on how to do it? What if you could do the same about problems in life? Looking up solutions that other people have found and tested with success? Would you want to use that guide?

The Activity: Help students create a board game of their life that begins where they are now and ends with them in college. Using feedback from others, identify potential traps or obstacles that could set them back or keep them from reaching college and include those in the game. Then, have students find strategies for avoiding or overcoming each obstacle on the board. Ask them to write down their answers to the following questions:

  • Are the traps you found likely to come up as you pursue college?
  • Will the solutions you found allow you to cross the finish line?
  • How can you make sure you have access to the solutions when you need them?

Bonus Features: People make money working their way through video games, discovering all of the hidden secrets, and then publishing guides on how to accomplish everything in the game. What are some “life guidebooks” on different career paths that students can gain access to?
