ESC Region 12 College Link is working to create a culture that fosters motivated administrators and qualified teachers working collaboratively in high-performing learning communities to enhance academic preparation and performance for all learners. Focusing on math and science, the College Link enlists the expertise of subject specialists to travel from district to district, implementing mentoring and modeling days to engage students and introduce educators to new technologies. The project also invests in community outreach, targeting such groups as the Lions, Kiwanis and Rotary Club—enlisting the aid of local organizations to raise GEAR UP awareness even further.
Program Highlights
- ESC Region 12 College Link organizes the GEAR UP Youth Congress, a leadership-training workshop challenging select students to promote a college-going culture amongst their peers. More than 150 students from the region participate in interactive team-building activities that promote leadership principles and share visions of future career endeavors.
- Rising eighth- and ninth-graders have the option to participate in the Make it Green summer camp hosted by the College Link. Students explore each stage of the green design process as they construct a green studio—from brainstorming to creating a floor plan to building with recycled materials. They also reflect on the energy usage in their own homes and consider ways they can change their families' habits to lessen their environmental impact.
