Amidst Disaster Comes Hope

Despite being just over ten years since Hurricane Katrina, tales of promise continue to emerge from New Orleans. J’Remi Barnes was born and raised in one of the many low-income parishes throughout the Crescent City. After Katrina, he and his family were forced to relocate multiple times before returning to New Orleans to begin again. It’s safe to say that going to college isn’t always commonplace for kids like J’Remi—but then again, most kids aren’t wired like J’Remi. His desire to get to college was strong. All he needed was the right environment to channel that energy.

In this story from Edweek, find out how charter schools like the Sci Academy are taking a no-nonsense approach to sending kids like J’Remi to colleges and universities across the country. The recent spike in New Orleans-area students going to college is proof that something is working. However, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. Some of Sci Academy’s approaches were considered fairly controversial. At one point, the school had to reverse course on some of their disciplinary practices in an effort to quell concerns from parents, administrators, and students. Ultimately though, this is a story of triumph that your TXGU kids can certainly relate to and feel inspired by. And don’t be surprised if you wind up a little misty-eyed. Having tissues nearby is highly recommended.
