Supremes Rule on College Affirmative Action

 

Colleges have been seeking to create ethnically and racially diverse student populations for years. Affirmative action has traditionally been a directive they can leverage to make sure minorities are well represented in their admissions each year. But a recent case before the Supreme Court led to them demanding “strict scrutiny” of any decision based on race a university might make to achieve diversity.

This NBC News report details the case in question and delves into the thinking of the court in handing down the decision. Fears of the court eliminating affirmative action altogether were alleviated, but colleges will have to work harder to avoid reverse-discrimination claims, like the 2008 case at The University of Texas at Austin that led to the decision.
