Sweet DREAMs

Here’s a disconcerting statistic: even though an average of 65,000 undocumented students graduate from U.S. high schools annually, only five to ten percent of those students will go on to attend college (according to The Department of Education). Perhaps even more vexing, less than one percent of those students will go on to get their four-year degree. But for many determined teens, these abysmal numbers motivate more than they mar. That's because programs like Texas GEAR UP provide these students with an abundance of free college prep resources all in one easy-to-access place. But that doesn't mean the process of applying and going to college is as streamlined as their peers. In fact, there's a lot we can do to help undocumented teens make it to college.

Whether it's creating a welcoming and safe environment at school, sharing information about scholarships available to DREAMers, or simply reaffirming the fact that students without legal documentation can go to college, there's a lot we can do to level the playing field for undocumented teens. Because if they can DREAM it, we can most definitely help them do it.
